Description

Draco Lucius Malfoy (b. 5 June 1980) was a British pure-blood wizard and the only son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy (née Black). The son of a Death Eater, Draco was raised to strongly believe in the importance of blood purity. He looked down on half-bloods and Muggle-borns. Draco attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1991-1998. He was sorted into Slytherin House almost the moment the Sorting Hat touched his head. During his years at Hogwarts, he became friends with Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Pansy Parkinson, and other fellow Slytherins, but he quickly developed a rivalry with Harry Potter. He was made a prefect of his house and was a member of the Inquisitorial Squad during his fifth year, at the end of which his father was imprisoned in Azkaban following the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Lord Voldemort charged Draco with making up for Lucius's failure, and he became a Death Eater at age sixteen but quickly became disillusioned and uncomfortable with the lifestyle. Draco was unable to complete his task of murdering Albus Dumbledore, which was later taken over by Severus Snape, and only performed his other duties fearfully and reluctantly. He and his family defected hours before the end of the Second Wizarding War, fearing for their lives.

Early Life (1980–1991): Growing Up at Malfoy Manor: Draco Malfoy was born on June 5, 1980, to Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, who came from rich pure-blood families. From a young age, he was told he was special because he was a wizard, from a pure-blood family, and part of the Malfoy family. The Malfoys and Blacks were proud Slytherins and looked down on anyone who wasn’t, like Sirius Black. Draco Malfoy was raised as the only child in the family mansion called Malfoy Manor, which his family owned for many years. His mom sang him a special lullaby that was a family tradition. He grew up in a home that regretted that the Dark Lord had failed at taking control of the wizarding world, but he was warned not to speak about this outside of his family’s circle and to keep these thoughts within the family. The Malfoys took pride in their pure-blood status and managed to keep up a good image while being allied with Voldemort. Lucius, a Death Eater, avoided prison by claiming that he was under a curse, while Narcissa supported pure-blood beliefs. They spoiled Draco, giving him many nice things, but also passed on their dislike for Muggles, half-bloods, blood traitors, and others who weren't pure-bloods, along with a collection of dark artifacts from their family history. As a child, he mainly played with other pure-blood kids and came to Hogwarts with friends like Theodore Nott and Vincent Crabbe.

Preparing for Hogwarts: As a child, Draco mainly played with other pure-blood kids from his father's friends. He came to Hogwarts with friends like Theodore Nott and Vincent Crabbe. He visited the school with his dad and was supposed to be watched by two students, but he didn't get along with them. Draco stole his father's wand to practice magic after seeing Merula perform a spell. His father wrongly blamed their house-elf Dobby for the stolen wand. Later, Draco and his father visited the Three Broomsticks, and Draco asked to go to Honeydukes with Jacob's sibling, promising to share secrets about his mom. Lucius wanted Draco to go to Durmstrang, a school that didn’t accept Muggle-borns, but Narcissa wanted him closer to home. In the end, they decided it would be Draco's choice. During a visit to Hogwarts, Draco helped resolve a problem with Slytherin and was praised by Professor Snape, which made him want to attend Hogwarts. When shopping for school supplies, he met Harry Potter but didn’t know who he was. He made mean comments about Muggle-borns but was friendly to Harry.

Hogwarts Years (1991–1998): First Year: Like other kids, Draco heard stories about Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived. Many people wondered how Harry survived a deadly attack, with some even thinking he was a Dark wizard. Draco’s father believed this theory, hoping Harry could help him gain power again. When Draco met Harry on the Hogwarts Express, he tried to be friendly, but Harry rejected him and chose to be friends with Ron Weasley, a family Draco (and the Malfoy family) disliked. This made Draco dislike Harry right away. At Hogwarts, Draco was sorted into Slytherin and quickly made friends while being rude to Harry. Draco acted a lot like his father, Lucius Malfoy, who treated others coldly. He had Crabbe and Goyle as his sidekicks throughout school. He challenged Harry to a duel after losing to him in a flying lesson. Later, he reported Harry for trying to sneak Hagrid’s dragon out, which got him in trouble too. He felt upset when Gryffindor won the House Cup at the end of the year.

Second Year: Before his second year, Draco insulted Harry and Ginevra Weasley at a bookshop, mocking her as Harry's girlfriend. He became a Seeker on the Slytherin Quidditch team because his father bought them new brooms. He hurt Hermione’s feelings by calling her a "Mudblood," which started a fight. Draco felt jealous of Harry, who was popular and skilled at flying, something Draco thought he would be the best at. Draco lost to Gryffindor in Quidditch because he was too busy arguing with Harry. At a Duelling Club meeting, he tried to attack Harry with a snake but failed, leading others to think Harry was the Heir of Slytherin. Draco shared some family history with Harry and his friends when they disguised themselves as Crabbe and Goyle to sneak into the Slytherin common room.

Third Year: Draco mocked Harry for being scared of Dementors and exaggerated his injuries from a Hippogriff named Buckbeak. He tried to distract Harry during a Quidditch match but got caught and punished. Harry and Hermione saved Buckbeak, which angered Draco.

Fourth Year: In 1994, Draco attended the Quidditch World Cup and made fun of Muggles and Harry. He was jealous when Harry was chosen as a champion for the Triwizard Tournament and passed out "Potter Stinks" badges. Draco was punished for trying to attack Harry by (temporarily) being turned into a ferret and bounced around by his teacher, Mad Eye Moody. He took Pansy to the Yule Ball and later mocked Harry for his choices after Cedric Diggory's death. While many thought Harry was lying about the Dark Lord returning, Draco knew it was true because his father had felt the Dark Mark burn and went back to Voldemort. Hearing his father talk about Voldemort’s return made Draco happy but also angry because Harry kept getting in the way. He wished for Voldemort to win so his family could be honoured again, and he could be seen as important at Hogwarts.

Fifth Year: In 1995, Draco became a Slytherin Prefect while Harry was not, and mocked Harry and Ron for not being one. He wrote a mean song about Ron and got into a fight with Harry and his friends. He joined Professor Dolores Umbridge’s Inquisitorial Squad and enjoyed having power over others. He and his group were to spy on Harry and his friends, who were secretly training to fight against Voldemort. He caught Harry and friends trying to find Sirius Black and later tried to turn him in but hesitated. However, when he finally cornered Harry, he failed to catch him. Then, his father was captured and sent to Azkaban prison, which shattered Draco’s world.

Sixth Year: In late 1996, with his father gone and his mother upset, Draco had to take on adult responsibilities. Things got worse when Voldemort ordered him to kill Dumbledore, a task he felt he would fail at. Angry at the world for turning against his father, Draco joined the Death Eaters and agreed to the task, thinking Dumbledore was the enemy. As he prepared to kill Dumbledore, Draco found the task much harder than he expected. He felt pressure from Voldemort and struggled with his dislike for violence. Though he refused help from Snape, he was good at protecting his thoughts, which helped him with his secret task of repairing the Vanishing Cabinet to let Death Eaters into Hogwarts. Eventually, he brought the Death Eaters to Hogwarts, leading to Dumbledore's death, but he couldn’t bring himself to kill Dumbledore himself. After failing to kill Dumbledore, he couldn't go back to school. Afterward, the Malfoy family returned home but lost their status among the Death Eaters.

Seventh Year: Draco’s personality began to change as he faced the realities of the war. He still hoped to restore his family’s reputation but tried to save Harry and his friends when they were captured and was forced to confirm the identities of them, but lies about them instead. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he tried to capture Harry again (but may not have been able to hand him over) but ended up losing control over his friends. When an enchanted fire broke out, he tried to save Goyle but lost Crabbe. Draco survived the battle because Harry and Ron helped him. After the battle, Draco felt lost and uncertain about his future as he sat with his family during the victory celebrations. Afterward, his father escaped prison by giving information about other Death Eaters. The events of Draco's teenage years changed him forever. He faced fear and saw his parents suffer, which challenged his beliefs. People he was raised to hate, like Dumbledore, showed him kindness, and Harry saved his life. After the war, Draco remained close to his father but refused to follow the old beliefs about pure-blood superiority.
